GSA employees report mice, ceiling damage and cloudy water after Washington office move
About 1,600 General Services Administration employees have been moved to another federal building in Washington, where workers report maintenance and water-quality concerns.
About 1,600 employees of the US General Services Administration have been relocated from the agency's F Street offices in Washington to the nearby Theodore Roosevelt Federal Building, where staff members have reported mice, a damaged bathroom ceiling and cloudy tap water.Photographs obtained by WIRED showed debris covering a toilet below a hole in a men's-room ceiling and a dead mouse caught in a trap. Workers also described signs instructing people filling water bottles to let the tap run for five to 10 seconds until the water became clear. The Theodore Roosevelt building also houses employees of the Office of Personnel Management.GSA and OPM did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the reported building conditions. GSA leadership has told employees to expect to work at the Theodore Roosevelt building until December 2028 while the agency's previous location at 1800 F Street undergoes extensive renovation.The temporary move is taking place during a broader reshaping of the federal government's property portfolio. GSA has announced plans to dispose of hundreds of buildings as part of an effort to reduce underused office space, and the Theodore Roosevelt Federal Building itself has been listed for accelerated disposition. The agency was also affected by workforce reductions associated with the Department of Government Efficiency before later announcing plans to hire about 400 employees.
